Research Funding: Restoring Insulin Production

September 9, 2010

Today, thanks to caring people like you, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity in the world. Our many passionate and dedicated supporters have made us the leader in science that aims to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications.

We want you to know how your support and investment in JDRF is making progress possible. Highlighted below is an example of the many cuttingedge areas of research you are helping us fund. Through these ventures, we are working to understand why type 1 diabetes develops; to determine how it can be cured and prevented; and to deliver safer and simpler ways to manage diabetes that will improve the lives of people with the disease. Thank you for making this work possible.

Restoring Insulin Production

Type 1 diabetes develops when a person’s immune system mistakenly attacks the insulin producing beta cells in the pancreas, destroying the ability to produce enough insulin to regulate blood sugar. Scientists once thought that when beta cells were destroyed, there was no way to re-grow them. However, in recent years they have learned that beta cells can in fact “regenerate.” JDRF has become a leader in advancing research on beta cell regeneration, one of the newest areas of science that JDRF funds. We strongly believe this research offers one of our best hopes for a cure.

JDRF-funded researchers have made tremendous progress so far. They have discovered ways to trigger cells in the pancreas to produce insulin, expanded the number of beta cells through pharmaceutical treatments in the laboratory, and identified genes, hormones, and proteins that can assist in regenerating beta cells.

Regeneration research could one day help to cure type 1 diabetes by producing a treatment – perhaps something as straightforward as a medication – to regenerate beta cells and restore the body’s ability to produce insulin.
