Research Funding: Revolutionizing Diabetes Management

September 16, 2010

Today, thanks to caring people like you, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity in the world. Our many passionate and dedicated supporters have made us the leader in science that aims to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications.

We want you to know how your support and investment in JDRF is making progress possible. Highlighted below is an example of the many cutting edge areas of research you are helping us fund. Through these ventures, we are working to understand why type 1 diabetes develops; to determine how it can be cured and prevented; and to deliver safer and simpler ways to manage diabetes that will improve the lives of people with the disease. Thank you for making this work possible.

Revolutionizing Diabetes Management

If you or someone you know has type 1 diabetes, you understand the burden of effectively managing the disease – the constant balancing act between insulin requirements and diet and lifestyle choices. The consequences of not achieving that balance – high or low blood sugar – can be serious: people with type 1 diabetes can develop complications like eye disease or kidney disease.

JDRF is working to simplify diabetes management and reduce the risk of complications by driving the development of an “artificial pancreas.” This device consists of a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and an insulin pump joined together by a sophisticated micro-computer. The artificial pancreas will ensure that people receive the right amount of insulin at the right time, freeing them from the worries and consequences of high and low blood sugar.

JDRF is leading the charge to develop an artificial pancreas. We recently announced a new partnership with a company that will work with us in creating a “first-generation” version of an artificial pancreas. We believe that the artificial pancreas will improve lives and help us find a biological cure, so we are working as quickly as possible to develop a device and make it available to people with type 1 diabetes.
