Research Funding: Pursuing Prevention

September 23, 2010

Today, thanks to caring people like you, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation funds more type 1 diabetes research than any other charity in the world. Our many passionate and dedicated supporters have made us the leader in science that aims to cure, treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes and its complications.

We want you to know how your support and investment in JDRF is making progress possible. Highlighted below is an example of the many cutting edge areas of research you are helping us fund. Through these ventures, we are working to understand why type 1 diabetes develops; to determine how it can be cured and prevented; and to deliver safer and simpler ways to manage diabetes that will improve the lives of people with the disease. Thank you for making this work possible.

Pursuing Prevention

JDRF is pursuing research to develop a vaccine to prevent type 1 diabetes. In a recent breakthrough, JDRFfunded researchers tested a new vaccine and found that it cured type 1 diabetes in mice. The vaccine, made of “nanoparticles” thousands of times smaller than a cell, reversed the immune attack that causes type 1 diabetes.

Moreover, the vaccine was “antigen-specific,” meaning it was able to target the immune system’s instigators of type 1 diabetes without suppressing the rest of the immune system. The next step is to translate this research for use in people. If successful, the vaccine holds out hope for preventing and curing type 1.
