Diabetes Camps

January 5, 2011

JDRF is excited to announce that we have partnered with the Diabetes Education Camping Association (DECA) to promote diabetes awareness, diabetes camping programs and diabetes research worldwide. JDRF is committed to improving lives and this includes emotional health.

Diabetes Camps help children and families with diabetes lead healthier, happier, and more productive lives through good diabetes management. There are more than 185 camps serving over 30,000 children in North America and many more worldwide. Their work is unparalleled in motivating and supporting children with diabetes and their families to stay on top of diabetes management everyday.

DECA provides:

  • “Best Practices” tools for diabetes camp management
  • DTREAT – an annual retreat for young adults ages 18-25 with type 1 diabetes
  • Educational conferences which focus on:
    • Diabetes, medical management, nutrition education, life skills, motivation
    • Advanced recreation, outdoor and adventure programming
    • Youth leadership development
    • Effective management and administration
    • Access to diabetes and camping professionals worldwide who volunteer to lend their talents to enhance diabetes camping programs and the lives of the families they serve

We are excited to share the Lilly Camp Care Newsletter with you and their Lilly Camp Care Package program.

Lilly Diabetes created this educational kit for campers and caregivers to complement lessons learned at camp.  Materials for campers are packed in a durable L.L.Bean® bookpack with an emergency tag—a special customization for children with diabetes— and include a colorful guide designed to highlight the critical components of diabetes management, a food spinner to help estimate carbohydrates, a log book to track blood sugar, and an inspiring letter from Olympian Kris Freeman.

Founded by parents of children with juvenile diabetes, JDRF has one mission: To find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. In the meantime, JDRF is committed to improving the lives of those living with diabetes until we find a cure.
